Lent 2009

Encountering Jesus, the Living Word of God, through Sacred Scripture

My dear friends in the Lord Jesus,

"The Word by name is Jesus Christ" is our parish Lenten theme. In light of the most recent Synod in Rome on the Word of God, the scripture, and the jubilee year of the celebration of the birth of St. Paul whose letters form a significant part of the New Testament, reflection on "The Word" this Lent seems timely enough. However, let us remember that the Word of God is not merely a book, as in an object, but a person, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Word of God and Jesus speaks the words of God. One way we encounter Jesus, the living Word of God, is through the Bible, the Church's sacred text. It is through the Bible that we come to know the Word of God, and the Word abides in us.

As the season of Lent approaches, it begins on Ash Wednesday. It is on that day that we receive ashes that were made from the palms of last year's Palm Sunday. The very beginning of Lent then directs our attention to its conclusion and its purpose, preparing for the celebration of the death and resurrection of the Lord. We principally do this through acts of penance, the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, receiving Jesus in the Eucharist, reflecting daily on sacred scripture, reaching out to those need and other ways of putting our faith in action. In this way our Lenten observance will, by God's grace, draw us to a closer relationship with The Word by name, Jesus Christ.

May your participation in our Lent and Easter prayers and programs, Sacraments and services, be a source of renewed faith for you and for all of us who long to encounter Christ, the Living Word of God.

LENTEN REFLECTION QUESTION
30 Days with Jesus, a Bible Reading Plan

Take time this week to reflect on the following question.
Write your reflections on paper and place the paper in the
basket at the foot of the cross in the sanctuary near the altar.

We are called by name to be disciples of Jesus.
We take this call seriously and respond joyfully
as did the first disciples (Luke 5:1-11; Matthew 9: 9-13).

As you encounter Jesus in the scripture
how does your call to be a disciple impact your life?

SECOND WEEK OF LENT

The Sermon on the Mount at the beginning of the Gospel of
Matthew 5, says that "Jesus went up to the mountainside, sat down and gathered the disciples around him and began to teach them".

Imagine yourself gathered around Jesus with the other disciples. What is it that you hear
Jesus speak about to you?

THIRD WEEK OF LENT

FOURTH WEEK OF LENT

How has our parish Lenten theme,
the Word by name is Jesus Christ,
affected your Lenten prayer and reflection?
How has the person and teaching
of Jesus brought you to a closer
relationship with the Holy Trinity,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
